This is For You

Rob Ryan is a British paper cutter artist, whose book, This Is For You totally charmed my heart. This Is For You is a naive little story about life and love. I absolutely adore Ryan’s use of hand-cut typography and graphically cut-out imagery — intricacies and imperfections included. I was so uplifted to see such honest artwork after such a long, grey, gloomy week.

An excerpt:
“You know you want to say something, but what? You know you want to say something, but how?…But nothing happens until you say the first word, or write the first letter, or cut the first line. And so I started…”

Charmaine Olivia

Good morning, world! It’s only 9am, but I feel like I’ve seen all I need to see for my daily inspiration hunt.

My official girl crush for today is San Francisco-based artist Charmaine Olivia. Charmaine Olivia’s work is unbelievably feminine, empowering, sultry, strong and beautiful. I only wish I could paint like she does. Love.

The Sistine Chapel

I was super excited to visit the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican Museum yesterday. Michaelangelo is a straight up genius! I happily re-lived my Art History roots and I enjoyed every minute of taking in this beautiful piece. The only downside to the visit were the guards who kept telling me “No photo!” every two minutes. My bad! Is it wrong to want to document this special piece of art history?

On a sidenote, seeing such wonderful art makes me want to get back into the fine art game! Any suggestions for painting lessons, peeps?

Party Vision

Alexandra Pacula is a Brooklyn-based artist whose large scale oil paintings explore the energy of the city at night. This also what ‘Friday night lights’ look like whilst partying in the Big Apple.

This Will Destroy You

These shoes, designed by Anastasia Radevich, are the epitome of art come to life.

Though I am partial to anything and everything typography, I am equally floored by Radevich’s typography heel concoction as I am by her workhorse/industrial heel. Her use of satellite photos as printed uppers are another quality of these shoes I am intrigued by.

Radevich’s collection feels slightly sombre and less optimistic — is it a reflection of our world? Of humanity? Hmmm, I am not at all phased. I truly appreciate the designer’s knack for storytelling and igniting emotion via her conceptual footwear designs.

Contraband

Taryn Simon is a New York-born photographer/writer. Her work, Contraband (2010), presents 1,075 images of items that were detained from passengers and mail entering the United States from abroad. Simon staked out at JFK Airport from November 16, 2009 to November 20, 2009 to photograph the seized items.

It is quite the interesting photography project.

Below, clockwise from top left: counterfeit Louis Vuitton handbags; steroids and other drugs, unidentified liquid, (hidden in Thermos in satin bedding); bird corpse, (labeled as home décor, shipped from Indonesia to Florida); bootleg Lost DVDs; fake perfume and cologne.

Playboy Caricatures

Whilst perusing the shelves of Chapters last weekend, I stumbled upon these caricatures in Aaron Sigmond and Nick Kolakowski’s Playboy: The Book of Cigars. Though I am not a Playboy fan, nor do I care to know the difference between a Cohiba and Montecristo, I can definitely appreciate these illustrations. Bill Cosby is my fave! I’m also still trying to figure out who the illustrator is.
